My nephew is in college
I love talking with young adults and watch them through their journey as they seek their way to find their path in life. Willingly, I try to give some guidance along the path to help them think about their choices and how those choices impact their direction.
Follow up:
I hover closely to the line and try not to direct their path. Thus, it brought me to a phone call I made to him yesterday. I took a few minutes to call my nephew who is in his 2nd year of college. As a voting member of our country, I believe everyone who is eligible to vote should do so and should be informed about their choices. So, as his Aunt, I found myself calling him to remind him of the debate and asked the fleeting question... "You did register to vote?" well, thank goodness, yes he did! He plans to exercise his right for the first time. How exciting it is to see him taking up this responsibility. I remember exactly where I was and what my thoughts were when I voted for the first time. Hopefully, years down his path he will recall this historic election and how his vote made a positive difference!
My nephew is full of energy, life, and fun; some people may call that ADHD?
As a young boy my nephew battled with his greatness and unique ability to respond quickly; some people may call that impulsivity?
I call this energy, life, fun and quick reaction lucky for this boy and lucky for the people he loves and cares about.
Yesterday, he told me about a new fraternity he is a charter member to at his college. It is a faith based frat where their focus in on giving back to their community. No drunken parties! No stupid pranks! No pledging that embarrasses the human spirit! His frat bothers are establishing their first fund raising event. You know I was proud! Now, this time I may have crossed my line of interference but I wanted him to have knowledge that there was help in the world to help his frat become successful! I offered lots of tips on how to set up fund raising events and how to create packages to help the boys raise funds. They selected Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to fund raise for at their “gladiator day” and the funds would be given to the local chapter to benefit kids in the community in which their college is located. I also offered funding assistance for their website development so that they can have a tool that allows their sponsors to be featured on the new frat website under their fund raising tab.
I was thrilled by his response and surprise that I would help him. It really never occurred to him to call me for help. Remember, I called him…. Anyway, his youth spoke to me loud and clear. His excited spirit, good heart, and entrepreneur spirit speaks to me in not the words that he chooses but in his actions.
I love my nephew and hope I can view him without the rose colored glasses that magically appear when I talk to him.
But I am very proud of him and how well he is doing with making decisions and good choices.
Our future is with the youth of America. ... yesterday, my nephew reminded me of that with just a simple conversation.
Let me challenge you now! Make an effort to impact the life of a young adult. Positive Impacts are an investment in our future. Make a phone call, take time with a young adult in your life. Help make our world a better place!
